Barbora Patkova from The Magnificent Revolutionary Cycling Cinema and The Otesha Project got in touch again and they might get involved with the Gathering too, helping out with the movies and possibly powering it with their bike generator! We’re hoping they’ll join us on our cycle tour to Spain next year too…

My goodness. Each week things are accelerating and the need for radical mass collaborative action becomes ever more starkly clear. The prices of food and energy is up again and the US dollar (linchpin of the global economy) continues to decline. Surely it can only be a matter of time before more and more people begin to rise up (as the landless in India have recently been doing).

SOCPA – THE MOVIE trailer

Photography Exhibition CLIMATE CAMP 07 @ The Foundry

It was August 12th – just before midnight – when climate change activists took over a piece of land at Sipson and started to build Climate Camp 2007. With access roads blockaded by police, hundreds of people carried everything they needed to build a self sustaining village in the shadow of Heathrow. Then for ten days concentrated the attention of the world’s press on the stupidity of planning air expansion on a threatened planet. The Climate Camp exhibition documents in sound, words, installations and images the life, workshops and direct action of those ten days. It examines the issues and thinking of people who seek to stop the world sleep-walking into a disaster that is manifestly preventable, but hugely profitable for a powerful few. Opening on Tuesday 30th October at 7pm the exhibition runs until 4th November before touring UK cities threatened by regional airport expansion. The Climate Camp on its own didn’t stop climate change – but it’s part of a growing social movement that can! Come and take the next steps forward at the upcoming UK-wide meeting on Nov 3-4 in Oxford. Everyone is welcome, whether you came to the camp, or were simply inspired by it. The Climate Camp had 4 key aims: education, direct action, sustainable living, and building a social movement to collectively tackle climate change and build a better world. Regional meetings have been happening up and down the country, and in Oxford we will meet to collectively share all our ideas for taking our aims further. The agenda for this meeting has not yet been set – if you have any ideas about topics you think it is important for us to discuss, or if you are up for helping with planning and facilitating this meeting, please email meetings[at]climatecamp.org.uk.
Local groups: please send any write-ups of discussions from your debrief meetings to website[at]climatecamp.org.uk, so they can be put on the website, and meetings[at]climatecamp.org.uk, so they can be fed into the national meeting agenda.

We’re very happy to announce that Roger Heathcote, the amazing all round Technical Bloke has joined the United Diversity team. And in true co-operative spirit is has already began to invest his fiver a month in our Commons Creation Fund
This evening I’m meeting up with Alex Shirley-Smith from The Greendream Company who went to my sixth form and is now an arhitect up for helping out with our land project in Spain.
And finally, we today received full written confirmation (i.e. the contract) of our £30k grant from the SME Innovation programe for the OpenCoin project (see http://uniteddiversity.com/ideas/ for details). We’ve still got a couple of details to iron out but its pretty much all go

The Leeds Ecovillage Project is having a launch event on Nov 2nd-4th
Strike-Bike Production starts on Monday the 22nd of October!. The “Strike-Bike” will be produced fully self-managed and without bosses. The 1800 bicycles will be produced and delivered to the customer in the beginning of November.

Last week Oli pointed out that this section can be a bit depressing and needs some explanation, so here goes: this section is to remind us of the context within which we all work and why projects like United Diversity are so important.

Climate Change is happening faster than even the worst case scenarios and Peak Oil is now. As David Korten explains, we’re entering the “perfect economic storm” that is going to force a radical restructuring of economy and society.

However, we shouldn’t really treat this news as depressing; the existing economic and political structures in are society inherently unsustainable and grossly unjust. Yes, we’re facing unprecedented change and the challenge before us is daunting. But its not depressing. It is an opportunity. NOW is the time to self-organise, share resources, and work together to create the world we want. The time is now.

Lizi Jamel from BASE: Building a Creative Sustainable Environment who is “a permaculture designer,environmental artist,performer,parent,grandparent (who) initiated & co-created permaculture area at glastonbury fest. for 10 years” got in touch. Sounds like someone who could come in handy!

Known as “guardians of the river” the people of Kingston Upon Thames live a dangerous and secluded life in their part of the wider London jungle. Survival Challenge Kingston takes a small group of explorers out into Kingston to look at the way other people live and ask questions about how we live. This is a kind of workshop. It is for those who want to challenge both mind and body and surprise themselves with what they are capable of. We set serious challenges for the individual while keeping humour close to hand. Suitable for ages 16 + and all fitness levels. This event is hosted by experienced survival artist Bryony Henderson who has hosted similar challenges in Rome, Rotterdam, Devon and other boroughs in London. Her work is influenced from her time spent with tribes in East Africa, 9 years of directing durational performance and working 9-5. She says “Survival Challenge has been my whole world for the last four years and it’s the most important thing in my life right now. It’s a series of events and workshops about people, places, time and culture. American Tribal Style belly dance is a modern dance form developed in San Francisco based on traditional dances from India, Spain and the Middle East. The distinguishing feature of ATS is its use of group improvisation as cues are used to change movements rather than memorized choreography. Using a ‘lead and follow’ format and an agreed vocabularly of movements, a whole group is able to improvise and yet dance with amazing synchronicity. The flavor is dynamic and unique, conveying the power of flamenco with the fluidity of belly dance. Come learn the fundamentals and experience the magic of ATS with Moirai, a London based tribal belly dance troupe.

On Friday I’m meeting the crew at Passing Clouds (a lovely venue in Dalston – upstairs is a bit like Candid Cafe but bigger and with live music, downstairs is a big hall) about holding regular United Diversity gatherings there.
The contract for Tom and Joerg’s OpenCoin funding is getting drawn up by the funders.

Sharon from Land Roots (a project very similar to United Diversity’s land project) informs me they are very nearly ready to start raising investment! They’ve sorted their legal structure and have a couple of benefits coming up soon (more details in future edition of the Guide)
